Every week I’ll be profiling a new expat who’s picked up sticks to come to London and work in fashion or related creative fields.
This week, it’s Danielle Meder, fashion illustrator and trend theorist.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in London?
I’m from Bancroft, Ontario. I lived in Toronto for eight years, and and I’ve lived in London for just over a year and a half.

How has your style changed since you’ve moved to London?
Definitely more colour! Have explored pinks and reds and even some green accents since I got here. Also a good rain coat becomes critical to have in your life. I’ve also embraced the natural wave in my hair and grown it out…

The best dressed neighbourhood in London is?
London is such a mix, people-watching in every neighbourhood is enjoyable for different reasons… not sure if I can choose one! What I love about my neighbourhood (Bethnal Green) is the intensity and variety… whether they’re Euro-Hipsters, real-deal East London cockneys, chavs or Bengalis, they all make an impressive effort to express themselves through clothing and grooming. It’s fascinating to watch.

Favourite and least favourite thing about living here?
Favourite thing – how history is everywhere here! I’m always learning new things about my neighbourhood or meeting friends in museums… I’m always conscious that I’m retreading the paths of so many lives before me.

My least favourite thing – it’s relatively expensive to North America, the income disparity here is more visible, so not only am I living in reduced circumstances, but small deprivations can be very noticeable sometimes.

Best dinner in London?
Hard to pick just one, luckily I have pretty simple tastes. Try the hipster hamburgers at the Sebright Arms off Hackney Road  – don’t bother with the chips though. I also love the dim sum at Silks & Spice in Camden.

The most played track on your iPod this week is?
“Off To The Races” by Lana Del Rey.

Last book you read?
“Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen

What do you miss most about Toronto?
How exotic and exciting and huge it seemed to my younger self.
